The idea
Beetles are the most successful animals on Earth — and this lesson treats them with the respect scientists give them. Students tour beetle body parts and strengths, the drama of metamorphosis, and two heavyweight champions: the rhinoceros beetle and the stag beetle. The session even touches genuinely current science — researchers today are turning insects into “cyborgs” to study how they move and sense the world. Then out come the pens: students draw a beetle in the tradition of scientific illustration, where careful observation and clean line work matter more than decoration. It’s the kind of drawing real entomologists have made for centuries.
How it begins
Before drawing a single line, students learn to see a beetle the way an illustrator does: head, thorax, abdomen, six legs, and the hardened wing cases that give each species its shape — building the drawing from big forms down to fine detail.
