Aurora over the lake
Oxygen about a hundred kilometers up glows green, and nitrogen lower down glows pink and violet. The light is faint, so you see it only far from towns: streetlights scatter in the air and wash out anything that dim. The colors were dropped into wet paper and left to run together, the way the light itself blurs.
