The Skies Above

Seven classes of art built on real science.

Art meets science, in space. Seven Wednesday afternoons of STEM-based art projects that help us see our skies with fresh eyes — watercolor, oil pastel, ink and more, each built on real science. Taught in person by Dr. Ayesa Kaur — professional artist, educator and the founder of Science Artistry.

The lessons one each class

    Neurographic Sunsets Color & light · Sharpie & watercolor

    Begin with a wandering line and an imagined sunset. Explore your paint palette, find warm and cool colors on the color wheel, and turn rounded shapes into a watercolor sky.

    Borrowed Light Astronomy · Oil & chalk pastel

    The Moon never changes shape, and it makes no light of its own. Find out what is really moving, then paint a glowing night sky in pastel on black paper.

    Celestial Navigation Astrophysics · Pastel & dot painting

    Before books, star patterns carried knowledge: when the seasons turned, when the animals moved, which way was home. Build a night landscape, throw a sky full of stars at it, then place a constellation dot by dot.

    Light Pollution Astronomy · Watercolor & splatter

    The galaxy is above every one of us, every single night, and most of us cannot see it. Find out what is hiding it, where it is still visible, and paint the sky a national park would give you.

    Emission Lines Atmospheric Science · Oil Pastel

    An aurora is a gas doing something specific, and the colors are the evidence. Find out what the Sun has to do with it, then blend one in oil pastel over the Puget Sound — the Seattle skyline, Mt. Rainier and an orca below it.

    Deep Field Astrophysics · Tempera & collage

    Two views of one sky. Paint the night your own eyes can see, then collage the nebula it takes a telescope above the atmosphere to reach — and work out how old the light was when it arrived.

    Stellar Nurseries Astronomy · Mixed media watercolor

    A nebula is a cloud of gas and dust light years across, and its colors are a chemical fingerprint. Learn to read the chemistry, then paint your own birthplace of stars in liquid watercolor, salt and gold.

Real science, in layers

Every lesson starts with the science, and the art is how it is understood. The science is written in layers: the lesson itself, then a deeper reading, then deeper still for the student who wants the arithmetic. Start where it is comfortable; go as far as you like.

The lesson, online too

Class is in person at Finn Hill Middle School. Each lesson also has its own page on science-artistry.com, open to your family through November 30 — and some come with interactive simulators: Borrowed Light, Emission Lines.

A working artist's technique

Every painting on this flyer is Ayesa's own, and each project teaches a technique from her own practice. Students finish with seven pieces of their own to bring home.

Who is teaching

Dr. Ayesa Kaur

A professional artist and educator in the greater Seattle area, and the founder of Science Artistry LLC. She has served as artist-in-residence for elementary STEAM art programs and teaches watercolor and pastel to everyone from kindergartners to seniors. Every lesson in this program is hers: her curriculum, her paintings as the examples, her techniques.

11 to 25 students. It runs once 11 have enrolled; if that many never do, everything you paid comes back.

Cost
$300 per child. Of that, $20 is a one-time registration & materials fee and $280 is the course fee. One enrollment per child.
Refunds
The $20 registration & materials fee is non-refundable. Withdraw before the first class and the rest — the full $280 course fee — is refunded. Once classes have begun, there are no refunds, and missed classes are not refunded or prorated. A class canceled on our side — weather, or the instructor — is made up, not refunded. If the whole program is canceled before it begins, you receive a complete refund, registration included. Anything beyond this is at the discretion of Science Artistry and the PTSA.
